Expect 'popcorn' thunderstorms for rest of week

   * Rainy weather in South Florida

They're called popcorn thunderstorms and expect them to to continue to burst along the South Florida coastline this week, just as the aptly named weather system did most of the day on Monday.

Instead of sprinkling snacks over Miami-Dade and Broward County, these spontaneous storms dumped nearly a half inch of rain in the area.

"These are storms that pop in a second and dissipate very quickly," said Evelyn Rivera, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service. "They're caused by the morning sea breeze."

The heat on the ground moves the morning moisture upward throughout the day, causing rain. Once the clouds run out of moisture, they disappear as quickly as they arrived, Rivera said.

Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are expected through the rest of the week, with a 60 percent chance along the coast and a 50 percent chance in the interior.

A collision of sea breeze and the normal air floor is another contributing factor to the day's gray clouds.

With the rainclouds blocking out the summer sun, Miami-Dade and Broward were a little cooler on Monday with temperatures in the upper 80s.

Tuesday and Wednesday temperatures are expected to be in the mid-90s. As the rain calms down on Thursday, the temperatures are expected to reach about 95 degrees.

Though the rain may put a damper on the day, it's the first substantial rainfall in nearly a year.

"We've been in a drought since around last November," Riviera said. "The areas that need it the most are in the interior. They have nothing, they're just hot, hot, hot."
