Pretty common actually.  With smaller and less organized systems the stronger, bigger, and better organized of the two will sometimes peel off "energy" and moisture.  With bigger systems its called the Fujiwhara Effect.

From September 6-9, 2001, forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida, observed a relatively rare interaction between two tropical cyclones in the Northeast Pacific basin (keep in mind that NHC's responsibility includes the Northeast Pacific and Northern Atlantic Oceans). Hurricane Gil and Tropical Storm Henriette got sufficiently close to each other that their circulations began to interact as the storms began to orbit around a point between their two centers (called the centroid).
