The Atlantic Ocean welcomed its latest named disturbance today when a low-pressure area north of the Leeward Islands became Tropical Storm Gert.

Forecaster at the National Hurricane Center say Gert won't affect either Florida or any city on the nation's Atlantic coast, but it could soon create problems for Bermuda.

As of 2 p.m., the storm was about 275 miles south-southeast of that island and moving at a speed of about 7 mph. It had sustained winds of 40 mph - just across the barrier for tropical storm status - and was on course to reach Bermuda by morning. A tropical storm warning has been issued for the island.

Another low-pressure area is lurking behind Gert, about 425 miles north-northeast of the northern Leeward Islands, and moving west-northwest at 15 to 20 mph, the hurricane center said. Forecasters are giving it a 30 percent chance of becoming a tropical cyclone by Tuesday.

This low-pressure area is producing limited amounts of rain and thunderstorms, and there are some indications that it might not have a closed area of circulation. Because it's so near Tropical Storm Gert, ocean conditions over the next two days may deter it from becoming a tropical storm itself, forecasters said.
