Re: why is she seemingly getting stronger and bigger partially over land?

Jim called this in his last update. Very warm water far beneath the surface of the ocean surrounds the islands where Irene has been tracking. Even upwelling brings very warm water up to the surface, and Irene's center hasn't really spent all that much time over land. It made a soft and brief landing in PR and never made landfall on Hispaniola. She's in a very juicy, cozy tropical atmosphere right now and loving it.
