Irene is passing off of the mountains of Hispaniola. The Inflow coming down the mountain slopes is warmer and drier,and that drier, stable air then flows directly into the core of the storm, disrupting convective processes. Irene will likely continue to struggle with significant intensification until she is clear of this area.

I see where the GFDL had Irene struggle around the DR. It makes sense even more as the trough is retreating faster than expected. The Bermuda high and the US high could merge sooner and push Irene west. This is sure got a lot of people nervous including the NHC.
