It's probably just one of those things.

Earthquakes aren't terribly uncommon in Arkansas or Virginia geologically speaking.  On a human time scale they are, certainly.  But there are many active fault lines in the country's interior & on the East Coast.  We think of all the pacific rim states as being where all the earthquakes happen, and it's true in a human time scale.  But nowhere near true when you're talking hundreds, or even thousands of years.  Hell, the New Madrid Earthquakes were some of the most intense the USA has ever had, and those were in Missouri.
