There are a great many factors at play here and they are not all meterological.

The NHC has staked their entire track guidance not on Irene but on the Bermuda High and the trough moving through the Great Lakes. Cantore stated this very clearly last night that the timing and strength of the trough is critical to the course of Irene.

If the atmosphere does not cooperate as predicted then Irene is inshore further south than the Outer Banks of NC. Perhaps much further south. They have placed FL, GA, SC in the low risk after all so millions of coastal residents are planning on mowing their lawns this weekend. They are not planning on getting pounded by Irene like they were 48 hours ago!

Politically, this is a nightmare scenerio for DC.

Undoubtedly, FEMA is gearing up for a major and they have to stage assets and personnel somewhere. The Pres., FEMA and the NHC have their butts on the line big time now. Get it wrong and heads will roll. The Pres. cannot politically afford to have a Katrina on his hands that leads to the massive criticism that was heaped upon "Brownie" and W. Don't flame me for bringing politics into this because the political stakes are what the are and do factor big time into what happens over the next days, weeks and months.
