They're saying that several models portray a scenario in which Irene does not take the more typical recurve away from the Atlantic that we've seen with so many prior storms along this path. In the scenario depicted by the GFDL (which has ALWAYS had a bias to the left with Irene) and the HWRF, an approaching trough at first attracts Irene back to the left as she draws nearer to Long Island/New England, presumably before the system gets carried up into and then away from the Canadian Maritimes as it is absorbed into the trough over the N. Atlantic.
I have not seen models portray such a scenario with a storm headed on a path similar to Irene's since 1985 (Hurricane Gloria). It's unusual, but not necessarily indicative of any particular outcome since we're still talking four days out. |
