From the Hurricane Irene Update 08/24/11 by U.S. Navy on Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at 9:03pm.

The latest models now predict Hurricane Irene will increase gradually over the next 72 hours and make landfall near Wilmington, NC Saturday late evening as a CAT III storm.

Second Fleet placed ships in the Hampton Roads, Va. area at Sortie Condition Alpha today Sortie Condition A.  Navy vessels can better weather a storm of hurricane magnitude when they are underway. A greater potential for damage exists when a ship is moored, where high winds and storm surges could act to cause damage to both the ship and the pier.  Ships will make final preparations overnight in anticipation of getting underway early tomorrow morning.

Region Mid-Atlantic ordered Hurricane Condition III today for all installations within Region Mid-Atlantic.

Getting the word out to EVERYONE in the Navy family is paramount. We are not only reviewing recall lists, but ensuring our personnel, and their families, have a family plan in the event of an evacuation.

In the event of an evacuation, active duty and civilian Department of Defense personnel are reminded to log on to the Navy Family Web Site https://www.navyfamily.navy.mil to muster themselves and their family members, and to identify any special needs they might have.

You can follow the Navy's FB page at U.S. Navy for updates.
