The torrid pace continues ....

2011 is burning up the charts right now.  2005 is the only year that got to J faster.

If 2011 gets Katia in the next couple of days and another named storm by Thursday, it will be tied with 2005 very briefly for fastest pace ever recorded.

Of note:  It is August 28, and in an average year, the season would have produced HALF of the named storms that 2011 has produced to date.

There appear to be three more viable waves that will emerge from Africa in the next week to 10 days.  Waves have been holding together and there is no doubt that once again the Cape Verde season is well under way.  2009, however, is proof that an early Cape Verde season does not mean a busy Cape Verde season.  It turned off that year as quickly as it turned on.

I am fairly certain that 2011, should September be only average or just below and October just average or just below, that 2011 would finish with 20 named storms and 3rd place in the record books.  The problem is that there seems to be (currently) no reason to think that average or just below will happen.  Therefore, my theory is that 2011 will move squarely into 2nd but will NOT surpass 2005.

East Coasters should be mindful that late season hurricanes are what historically affect their area, NOT early season.  Therefore, East Coasters should keep a weary eye to the sky through the end of September.
