See this site: http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/ Front page, on top. As of posting this it read:
"2012-03-07 01:03 Strong Solar Eruption; Earth-Directed CME Likely
An R3 (Strong) Radio Blackout is now in progress, beginning about 7:00 p.m. EST today. The site of the eruption, previously active Region 1429, is now near center disk, so there's high-potential of an earth-directed CME. In addition, expect the imminent beginning of a Solar Radiation Storm. Analysis now occurring on both fronts, watch here for updates."

We could see auroras across much of the US. It's not something to be really concerned about though aside from some of the problems you posted. That has happened in the past where there have been some problems due to solar flares. I don't see a lot about what kind of impact this might have specifically yet. It all depends how directed toward Earth it is.
I also like this site: http://spaceweather.com/ But it only has a little blurb on it so far.
I see one site I found through Google News about it: http://www.11alive.com/news/article/231619/40/Major-solar-flare-erupts-from-the-sun
You may find this interesting about a previous solar flare that did cause some power problems: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/March_1989_geomagnetic_storm Not sure how powerful that was though. (It depends not only on the number but also how it is directed too.)
We'll know more of what to expect in the next few days. |
