I think one of the most infamous instances of this phenomenon has to be the night Katrina crossed the Florida peninsula as a Cat 1 and maintained her intensity entirely during her trek across the state--she just happened to cross right over the Everglades area and sucked up that swamp like an energy drink and, well, we know what happened next. To me, that part of Katrina's story was as awesome as any other.
