For what it's worth, I do not think this is terribly unusual. It will be unusual if it holds together over the water. I see these huge waves form over the African continent this time of year every season and look impressive as they approach the coast, then as soon as they hit the water *POOF*--they're gone. Pretty typical for June.

That's why the central Atlantic wave seemed so impressive to me; to see a CV wave get that deep into the basin and hold together in mid-June--now THAT is unusual. But as our man in PR said, its convection was enhanced by a ULL to its NW, so the wave's staying power was a bit of an illusion.
