Yet another funny but serious update from Okinawa - the are going to get hit again it seems...

Commander Fleet Activities Okinawa

Good evening, Okinawa! Jelawat continues to whiffle toward Taiwan, finally moving with a purpose and posting a respectable eight knots as it starts its journey North. It's still a "Super" Typhoon, with SUSTAINED winds of 140 knots and gusts up to 170. I'll say it again: wind gusts up to 170 knots - THAT'S 196 MILES AN HOUR for the less nautically inclined. Impressive.

The good news is that by the time Jelawat arrives on our doorstep, it'll be back to just a "regular" typhoon, with sustained winds of ONLY 90 knots (you know it's been a crazy typhoon season when you think a 90-knot storm isn't even worth closing your windows). The bad news is that it's forecast to land RIGHT on our doorstep with a closest point of approach now at a mere nine miles from Okinawa - late Sunday night if the forecast holds true. Too snicker-snackering close if you ask me

As the only military professional on Okinawa authorized to declare TCCOR "Bouncy House," I
can safely say it's still a couple of days away. But if Jelawat does end up parking itself on our doorstep for a few days (on the "bad" side of the island), those 90 knots of sustained wind will have you searching somewhere in Central China for that Little Tykes swingset you had to elbow people out of the way to buy last Christmas at the Exchange.

Now would be a good time to scoop up some of that questionable sand that has spilled out of your ruptured sand bags and re-bag it. Of course you COULD just wait until you see which direction the rain and wind are coming from, panic when you realize a wall of water is headed toward your living room, and run around in the middle of sideways rain being driven by 90-knot winds to get your few remaining sandbags in a position to block at least SOME of that water, while your wife looks on sadly shaking her head and throwing down towels. Not that I would know what that's like. But you would probably feel pretty silly. Maybe. Your call.

Stay tuned, stay safe! Stormy
