Commander Fleet Activities Okinawa Good afternoon, Okinawa!
Jelawat has been downgraded from "Super Typhoon" to just "Plain Old Typhoon" status (sorry, Jelawat). But it's still plenty strong and will arrive in Okinawa tomorrow sporting 100 knot winds with gusts up to 125. And with a FIVE MILE CLOSEST POINT OF APPROACH (Zoiks!) we'll get every bit of those winds. Get ready to rumble! We're still holding at Tropical Cyclone Condition of Readiness 2 - and since TCCOR 2 is 24 hours before 50-knot winds and TCCOR 1 is 12 hours before 50-knot winds ... Hmmm. Ahhhh. Wellllll.
OK, let's just say that math skills didn't get me this job. I think we ought to be setting TCCOR 1 around 8 o'clock tonight if Jelawat stays on schedule; after that, TCCOR 1C (Caution) and 1E (Emergency) are totally dependent on ACTUAL wind speeds. But if I were a betting man, I might expect to wake up tomorrow to at least 1C and possibly 1E. That means you need to GET. READY. NOW!!! Once the sun goes down tonight, it's an open question whether you'll have another chance to prevent your picnic table from taking an unplanned trip to the People's Republic of China; where they'll no doubt paint it red and sell it back to you via Walmart. ;) Stay tuned, stay safe!
