The additional troubling element people tend to overlook with regard to hurricanes that threaten the NYC area is the speed with which they typically move inland. The Long Island express, for example, was moving at about 60 mph when it plowed into Long Island. Sandy looks like she, too, will be moving inland quite rapidly. This makes evacuation all the more difficult--it really needs to begin 72 hours out, but it is rare that we know for sure exactly where a storm will make landfall 72 hours in advance, so it's just not feasible. |
