Fiji Meteorological Service Special Weather update December 16, 2012 | Filed under: Fiji News | Posted by: newsroom The Nadi Weather Office yesterday issued the following advisory: A tropical cyclone gale warning is in force for: q Taveuni, qCikobia qVanua Levu and nearby smaller islands and q Northen Lau group A strong wind warning is in force for: q The rest of the Fiji group A damaging heavy swell warning is in force for: q The rest of the Fiji group The track of Tropical Cyclone Evan has taken a more southerly curve bringing the system closer to the northern and western parts of the Fiji group Strong winds and rain may be felt in the northern division from today Sunday, December 16. People living along the coast, low lying areas and specifically in the northern and western parts of Fiji must make immediate preparations for safety and possible evacuation as the weather may deteriorate over the next 24 hours TC Evan is currently a Category 4 system with wind speeds averaging 165 kmph with momentary gusts to 230 kmph. TC Evan is expected to pass about 400km northeast of Cikobia or 520km northeast of Labasa at 4am today Sunday, December 16. People living in these areas are strongly advised to take appropriate precautions. At 4pm today Sunday December 16, TC Evan is expected to be located about 145km northeast of Cikobia and 255km northeast of Labasa. KEY MESSAGES The public is advised to contact their local District Officer or Divisional Commissioner for information on Evacuation Centers. Contact numbers attached. Ensure your property is well secured and family kept safe.
