NRL created the system the NHC uses for tropical cyclones: http://www.nrlmry.navy.mil/atcf_web/
The NHC updates best track data every six hours, or as needed, but the position estimates are at 0, 6, 12, and 18 Zulu. (2am, 8am, 2pm and 8pm EDT) For a very powerful storm they might do an intermediate position update. Usually it gets posted around half an hour after that. And the NRL posts it extremely fast.
They update other information as it becomes available, like satellite imagery.
Their site is not great when it comes to trying to link to things. For example though, that first image you posted:
http://www.nrlmry.navy.mil/tcdat/tc13/ATL/98L.INVEST/vis/geo/1km_zoom/20130905.1515.goes13.x.vis1km_high.98LINVEST.20kts-1012mb-138N-313W.96pc.jpg
Take off the image from the link and visit the directory:
http://www.nrlmry.navy.mil/tcdat/tc13/ATL/98L.INVEST/vis/geo/1km_zoom/
Most directories have a "LATEST.jpg". Like this:
http://www.nrlmry.navy.mil/tcdat/tc13/ATL/98L.INVEST/vis/geo/1km_zoom/LATEST.jpg
That updates! So if you want the latest image you can do that, or if you want to show a snapshot of what the conditions were at the time you looked, then do the other image.
Satellite imagery updates every 15 to 30 minutes. Closer areas to North America probably every 15 minutes perhaps. I kind of forget. Off/over Africa probably longer times, likely every three hours, I forget.
By the way, 90L is 98L. 90L was released by mistake this morning. Three minutes after releasing it they deactivated it. They updated 98L instead then. That would be one of the rare mistakes made in the ATCF system. |
