Fred, when you say lots of houses are being "raised," do you mean set up on pilings? We saw some of that going on on This Old House.
Or did you mean "razed," as in torn down, which might better fit the context of your post? Just wasn't sure what you meant.
As to the "raised" alternative, there was something in our local news a couple of years back about FEMA's having made offers re several older Pensacola Beach houses on grade to subsidize setting them up on pilings, but we haven't seen that happen here once yet.
What we have seen, just as an aside, is a trememdous building boom -- many lots that remained empty for all of the years since Hurricanes Ivan and Dennis are finally being built upon. Of course there are many positive reasons for this, including the improving economy and continued relatively low interest rates, but it also signals, IMHO, a growing complacency and/or forgetfulness about the risks of living here. Just human nature.
It certainly is creating lots of jobs. |
