It's incredible how far some of the dropsondes have traveled. Vertically, some of the sondes on the current mission have been released about 1.5 nautical miles up. Some of the sondes have traveled horizontally about 8.5 nautical miles. They do have little parachutes, so I guess that helps a bunch, but that is still a lot of horizontal distance.
There have been some very strong winds higher up, between the levels of the surface and plane.
Perhaps around 600 feet in one sonde, momentary winds of over 170mph. That particular sonde had momentary winds of 139mph at the surface.
Two sondes have had momentary winds on the way down as high as 180 and 181 mph.
In the image below, the little sonde icon indicated where it landed. (or when it terminated if it didn't make it all the way down in one piece) You can see how far some are from the flight path.
