people in the Bahamas went to bed to this 11 PM forecast - a depression that would dissipate in less than 3 days, staying well away from the Bahamas:




Wed, 11 AM, the 1st "Major" appeared in the forecast track, after brushing the Bahamas as a hurricane




2 days later, a major hurricane is still spinning over them
