Re: Patricia at 4am CDT on Friday: 200mph; 880mb; Strongest NHC has ever handled

The rainfall over that mountainous terrain, and the decimation of the coast where it comes ashore, will be horrific. I've seen some unbelievably intense hurricanes in my lifetime--Gilbert, Wilma--but never have I seen the National Hurricane Center say this: "This makes Patricia the strongest hurricane on record in the National Hurricane Center's area of responsibility (AOR) which includes the Atlantic and the eastern North Pacific basins. The minimum central pressure estimated from the aircraft data, 880 mb, is the lowest ever for our AOR. It seems incredible that even more strengthening could occur before landfall later today."

Folks in the path of this beast will be in my thoughts this weekend. Absolute nightmare.

I see something like this, and it terrifies me to think about what it would be like living here in Tampa Bay if a system of similar intensity bore down on us. The frenzied, chaotic nature of evacuation attempts, and the very real thought that we would have to leave so much behind, and that there would be nothing left of any of it when we return, including our home itself, is pretty sobering.

This is a terrifying situation for people directly in Patricia's path.
