I do see a "Chris" tab on it. Maybe when they say hurricanes, they really do mean only hurricanes, not tropical storms. I didn't notice if Ernesto was there when it was active, though the only two tabs are for the two Atlantic hurricanes this year.
I really wish there was one site that stored satellite imagery for all storms and it was easily accessible in a display. It would take a massive amount of storage and bandwidth, but it would be nice to have. The data is stored and I guess can be accessed from NOAA, but not easily I don't think. Not in a nice display going back years.
O/T
I know Google wants to make money, but I don't like some of the techniques they are using. I want the option so that if i get 28,000 map loads in a month (desktop loads, mobile map views are free), maps from them will just shut off on my site. I'd be fine with that. I'm going to use ArcGIS (ESRI) for many of the maps that use Google now and continue using CesiumJS for the live recon system, where the people using it can choose which mapping to use, such as Microsoft, ESRI, Mapbox, or maybe even OpenStreetMap. (so if one provider changes something, there are others)
But until I make the switch, Google is being fun. Within my account I have different projects. I assume the total map loads I can use for all projects combined is 28,000 map loads. However, on at least one of the projects Google randomly set a limit of one single map load per day in July. (from unlimited) I use a different API key for each project. I am now using the API key for the model system in the recon system. But I'm afraid Google might set the others to 1. To set that quota higher, you have to enable billing. But when you enable billing, then you have to be careful and setup a quota so you don't get charged for going over. (and there interface is confusing) If you don't set a quota, you could get charged hundreds, even thousands. I would have been charged hundreds in a single month if this pricing had been in effect last year, I had billing enabled and didn't have a proper quota set.
I'm switching the most heavily trafficked maps first to ArcGIS. The maps on the front page of the recon system (when recon is available) and the model system (map is always shown) get a lot of traffic. That's where I got tens of thousands of map views last year for some of the storms.
First thing I'm doing though is fixing the member map here at CaneTalk: https://canetalk.com/map/ What it currently looks like using Google is what Google does when you don't enable billing so you can set a higher quota. (Technically they say the API key is no good, but when I tried to generate a new one, it only gave me a quota of 1, so I didn't bother updating it.)
Google has made some other missteps lately, but Facebook is still "winning" in the mistakes department.
In other news, CaneTalk now uses https. The hosting provider Jim uses for CaneTalk now has free SSL. With some configurations, all pages now force the use of https. |
