"'Twas a dark and stormy night..." Well, actually, that's what the day was like Tuesday here on Santa Rosa Island, FL. Dark, roiling skies; seemingly endless, torrential, wind-driven downpours; and a fierce gusty wind that shook the house and roared through the palm trees all day long. Still raining on and off, and we're still experiencing 25 mph sustained winds with higher gusts.
Rte. 399 through the Gulf Islands National Seashore between Pensacola Beach and Navarre Beach is closed due to wash-over. The Pensacola Beach fishing pier is closed until further notice, though I haven't heard reports of any damage. There are supposedly 15,000 without power up on the mainland. Here on the island (at least at our house), we had a couple of momentary outages only.
The prediction here is for more of the stormy conditions through Wednesday night. It just never ceases to amaze me, the power and fury of these storms, even if not quite hurricane strength, and even if not directly on our doorstep. And this was a relatively small cyclone. Good grief.
