2 day: 46.34 inches
For that USGS site, BOGUE SOUND AT SR 1182 AT ATLANTIC BEACH, NC.
Using radar, Wunderground has radar estimates printed in their imagery. Of course they might often be high.
Morehead City:
https://www.wunderground.com/radar/radblast.asp?ID=MHX&type=NTP&num=10&delay=50&showlabels=1&showstorms=0&lightning=1
Wilmington:
https://www.wunderground.com/radar/radblast.asp?ID=LTX&type=NTP&num=10&delay=50&showlabels=1&showstorms=0&lightning=1
Raleigh-Durham
https://www.wunderground.com/radar/radblast.asp?ID=RAX&type=NTP&num=10&delay=50&showlabels=1&showstorms=0&lightning=1
Gives begin date.
But 36.6 inches is on the first one at the moment, with a begin date of September 12th, so in this case it may have underestimated it as long as that gauge works properly.
