I guess we really should unplug the washer and dryer when it gets really bad. I never thought about that. You can't protect those because they can't be on a surge suppressor unless you have one for the whole house. We have something that does that at the box, but it doesn't work very well. I think we've had that on there and we've still lost stuff.
Whenever we go on vacation we always unplug the computers and TVs. We unplug the cables too sometimes. I have forgotten to do that sometimes. Sometimes we have fiber optic depending on which service we are on. Around a decade ago we had an issue when lightning struck the light pole in front of my house and the surge traveled to the base of the pole where the cable box was. The surge then traveled over the coaxial cables into the house. Some of those cables are also on surge suppressors. We used to even have one in the attic too. In the house we have some wired ethernet cables, with one going across the house. Some of the surge suppressors have the ability to run that through it, though I'm not sure if ethernet cables have that much of an issue.
We've never had a problem with the smoke detectors that I can recall, even though they are wired in.
We also turn off the water. That's so the house doesn't flood for some reason. I know someone that happened to once. They left on vacation and when they got back they had a flood. Not sure what broke, but I think it was on the second story and it was an absolute mess and took years to fix after dealing with insurance. |
