One of the power plants suffered a lot of damage, may take over a year to be fixed

You can watch the interview at the link below. It seems like they already had to use backup systems just to meet normal demand. The damaged power plant seemed to meet about a third of the demand, but now it's offline, for maybe a year or more. As of Wednesday afternoon, only about 600,000 out of 1.5 million clients had power.

This plant had 820MW. Others have a total of maybe 1000MW. Combined, they had maybe 1820MW. On a peak day they need 2,300MW and to do that they need to use backup equipment that isn't the most efficient. That was before the quake. Now 820MW is gone, maybe for a year or more perhaps.

He was talking about the plants being decommissioned in 5 to 7 years but the quake took them by surprise.

They are asking for 500MW from mobile generators. It sounded like FEMA is working with them on that I guess. But that would be less than what they had and they already had to use backup equipment before for peak usage.
