The advisory speed includes the forward motion. (I've seen meteorologists get that wrong too) The other side of the storm, relative to the forward motion, would usually be expected to have lesser winds.
Latest pass has this in the eastern quadrant:
Flight Level Wind (30 sec. Avg.): 113 knots (130mph) Peak (10 sec. Avg.) Flight Level Wind: 119 knots (137mph) SFMR Peak (10s Avg.) Sfc. Wind: 87 knots (100mph)
This would be about where you expect the strongest winds. (eastern to southeast part given the forward motion) |
