About the New Orleans voluntary evacuation inside the levee system...

Been so busy, just noticed this being discussed.

About mayor LaToya Cantrell's decision:

"'We are not calling for a mandatory evacuation because the time simply is not on our side. We do not want to have people on the road, and therefore in greater danger,' Cantrell said."

I guess people are arguing about this online. There was time to prepare for this and order a mandatory evacuation. They should have planned ahead. It was looking like this was going to be a major hurricane and they could have planned for it being one. You have to explain to people the uncertainties with a storm like this in advance. I don't know much about the new levee system. I was reading Jeff Masters blog earlier about how this could be a major test of the levee system. I just hope people treat this storm seriously and don't think that because there is only a voluntary evacuation inside the levee system that it might not be that bad. We don't know how bad it will be, but that's why people should have evacuated. You can't wait until the last minute for a storm that really is as bad as expected. Also in Jeff Masters blog it talked about how in an overtopping situation the water level might be no more than 5 feet deep in New Orleans rather than the 15 to 20 feet due to levee in breaches in Katrina, but that's still a lot.

I'm not familiar with the area, but I think it should have been mandatory. I knew days ago it would take time to evacuate New Orleans because they would need to use a lot of public transportation as well. I really wish this storm would weaken instead and hit a less populated area and be far enough from New Orleans, but wishes don't do anything. You always have to prepare.
