it's been a brutal June here, so far - I am ready for Autumn & Summer has only just started. Mind you, i am complaining from the comfort of my air-conditioned home, so much worse for homeless

I also read an article this week that said the coating that some municipalities put on asphalt to reduce the "heat island effect" can actually make it feel worse for people, due to the reflected heat - it may not sink into the ground as much, but it can feel hotter to people and animals. The homeless in urban areas would feel that effect most.
