I hope you get some rain.

Thinking about drought and rainfall reminds me of some unrelated articles in the past few days about a study about California. I was thinking about posting about it, but some of the articles had clickbait-y headlines. In the past they have had extreme flooding at times. It was discussing what impact that could have in modern times. It's actually a serious threat to think about. Drought is obviously a massive concern right now, but with warm air being able to hold more moisture now, so that higher precipitation is possible, it could be even worse. And with the population of California being about 80 times higher than the 1860's, when thousands died, it is something people there have to be aware of in addition to things like earthquakes. I'm sure lots of places have threats like that over long periods of time, but that one is rather striking to think about.

As for the MRMS display, which I love, I really hate that their site doesn't take out the part of the link that has the date in it when you select "Auto Update" in the display. Even though the display is supposed to auto update, it loads with the data from the time in the link on first load. It will eventually display current data, but you have to wait until it updates. So, I made an update to the forum that automatically removes the date from the link when the link has "time_mode=update" in it for that display. If they ever change their site, that may no longer work.

If someone saves a link with "Auto Update" unchecked, and then clicks "Permalink", they can get a link to the display at a certain time. Then "time_mode=static" will be in the link and the forum will not change that link. But otherwise, the forum will remove the date from the link.

Static version of previous link Cypress posted, with "Auto Update" turned off, it links to that specific time:

https://mrms.nssl.noaa.gov/qvs/product_viewer/index.php?web_exec_mode=run&menu=menu_config.txt&year=2022&month=8&day=14&hour=16&minute=10&time_mode=static&zoom=7&clon=-94.4&clat=27.5&base=5&overlays=15&mping_mode=0&product_type=shsrs&product=SHSR&qpe_pal_option=0&opacity=1&looping_active=on&num_frames=36&frame_step=200&seconds_step=1200

The same link Cypress posted, but the forum now removes the date from the link and will always point to the latest display:

https://mrms.nssl.noaa.gov/qvs/product_viewer/index.php?web_exec_mode=run&menu=menu_config.txt&time_mode=update&zoom=7&clon=-94.4&clat=27.5&base=5&overlays=15&mping_mode=0&product_type=shsrs&product=SHSR&qpe_pal_option=0&opacity=1&looping_active=on&num_frames=36&frame_step=200&seconds_step=1200

To be helpful, the system provides a note about the link conversion when you preview a message. (and how to post a link to data for a specific time if that is what someone means to do) I post the link to the MRMS display sometimes and it annoys me as I have to remember to remove the date. No longer!

In other news, I have finished making forum updates for now. I updated an older post here as I made some of the updates:
https://canetalk.com/2022/06/1655741479_1655354920.shtml
But will post the last message I made there here too:

For now, I have completed the updates in the forum. I have begun work on redesigning my site based on what I learned from updating the forum. I will first switch to a new layout that I will apply to the simple pages on my tropical sites. (dozens of pages) That's the easiest part. Then, work on the model and recon systems, which will also involve changing some of the code of the systems. It will also involve applying the new layout. The entire process will likely take a few years. Most, if not all, of the updates to the model and recon systems will not become live until the completion of the updates I am making due to the considerable changes that will be made to the code. The current systems would break if I tried to apply newer updates. I will be trying to write it better, for eventual public release of the code, make it more efficient, make some of the file sizes smaller, and hopefully use less files. (I recently made a backup of my tropical website and there were 658,000 files and 79,000 folders for a total of 18.6 gigabytes of data.)

I will make various updates to the forum if I find an issue or if I find a better way to do something based on what I learn redoing my site. If anyone has any issues that they find on the forum, or suggestions, let me know.
