I've never really taken a look before at the source of the river. Lots of lakes up there.

That Wikipedia map on the Mississippi River page shows it best, like going north:

Speaking of flowing north, but on the opposite end at the mouth of the river, an article on salt water intrusion from the Gulf up the Mississippi River:
