Origin of Hurricane Norma in the East Pacific

I saw this on the local news here last night. Very interesting. Never knew that was something that happened.

Sometime in the past few years I've heard about the pass ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chivela_Pass ), but not about it helping to form storms I don't think.
