Re: sorting out the "hurricane buzzwords & hype" in season forecasts

One of the local meteorologists here has discussed the indicators that indicate we are likely to see a busy season. But anything beyond that is just someone trying to get it right so they can brag about it later. (and when they get something wrong, hope that everyone forgets)
There's historically warm water out in the Atlantic and we may see La Nina during the peak of the season, so it's looking like a busy season overall. Doesn't mean it will be near land or that it will be busy for sure.
I just did a Google search and I see all the headlines AccuWeather made. That's what that's about. I'm not visiting any of their links. I can only imagine what would have happened if AccuWeather was what the government used instead of the NWS. AccuWeather is sometimes not much more than some random person hyping up something on social media. Why try to panic someone only during the season when you can do it all year long? More clicks all year!
Why can't people just stop at giving the reasons why it might be an active season?
This is the headline on AccuWeather's site: "AccuWeather sounding alarm bells: Super-charged hurricane season possible in 2024"
And the portion of the page that Google prints out:
"It can be a "blockbuster" hurricane season, AccuWeather hurricane experts warn, as all of the ingredients are coming together for explosive tropical..."
From searching on Google, I didn't visit. Ridiculous. They could have put out a responsible article and said it is likely to be a busy season, but no, they had to try to scare people. In February. I have no respect for people that try to scare the heck out of people simply to make more ad revenue. I'm sure they probably go over some of the actual things that could lead to a busy season, but the framing is designed to scare people. But this is what they do and they're not stopping. |
