I wish the Air Force plane hadn't turned off the SFMR. NOAA plane is almost to the center, but they turned theirs off too. When Air Force got winds that were a bit stronger than flight level, maybe they thought there was an issue with it and they turned it off. Not sure. And then why did NOAA turn it off. They were getting tropical storm force winds way out. I haven't compared radar to see if that was in a band though. Flight level winds have come up since NHC wrote their discussion at 4am CDT. 10 second winds with Air Force at flight level of 700mb was 86 knots. (99mph)
Meanwhile NOAA in eastern quadrant, coming from the east and headed due west, has 30 second flight level winds of 97 knots, 112mph. 10 second if 104 knots, 120mph. I don't know what the adjustment factor is for the surface. I know for the other levels based on this paper:
https://tropicalatlantic.com/reconnaissance/#:~:text=GPS%20Dropwindsonde%20Wind%20Profiles%20in%20Hurricanes%20and%20Their%20Operational%20Implications
But not 750mb. But going in between 90% and 80% reduction, the NHC might say it's 100mph in the next update. |
