I used to think recycling helped more than it does. Then I found a lot ends up in the landfill anyway. I think somewhere around here they were dumping all recycling in a landfill. I forget if it was that instance or another, where the municipality just stopped the recycling program. And even still, a lot probably gets sold overseas, the ones buying, and it just ends up in a landfill because it's cheaper. And maybe a landfill, as a lot ends up eventually the ocean.
And then fish eat it. And people eat the fish. Or what we eat is fed fish and then we eat that animal. And we end up with microplastics and whatever else in our bodies.
I do try to buy less and less. If you really get into the habit of not buying what you need, it's a great thing for a lot of reasons. But companies need to do more. They pretend, with carbon offsets or whatever, but a lot of times it just isn't meaningful. Society needs to change in a lot of ways I just don't see it getting better anytime soon. Worse is more likely for now. |
