They'll now be able to issue Potential Tropical Cyclone Advisory Products up to 72 hours in advance of something that hasn't become a depression yet. That could be really helpful for something that hasn't developed yet but is expected to strengthen quickly. They don't have to wait until 48 hours out when they can issue a watch. They can now issue a PTC advisory without issuing a watch or warning now. Sometimes things don't end up developing, so that could mean more things getting a PTC advisory that doesn't end up developing, but I think for the times it really might develop quickly it makes it worth having.
Getting hurricane force radii is nice too for up to 3 days out. Previously it was two days. I can recall a lot of times locally they show products that show the expected winds based on the wind radii. Some have their own model data they use for that, but when they show the forecast wind data it was always weird for hurricane force winds to disappear at two days, when in reality they wouldn't. If they showed the product along a track in motion, they would have to explain why the hurricane force winds disappeared after 48 hours. |
