"A Dark Day for Our Country"

After a little bit of good news on some firings being reversed, at least temporarily as who knows how long courts will be able to hold out, of course there was going to be bad news too.
With Trump's speech at the Department of Justice and enough Democrats voting to pass the bill they did, I think March 14th, 2025 will likely go down as the day America fell to authoritarianism. It's not something that happens all at once obviously. Given the courts are still providing some roadblocks, you could argue we're not fully there, but we are firmly on that side of things now. I think America will survive ultimately, but it's not going to be easy. But Friday was a really bad day. I don't know how to categorize what America kind of is now. We're technically still the United States of America, but in a lot of ways not really.
Democrats needed to not vote for the bill. Things would have been bad with a government shutdown, but things are about to get a whole lot worse with what they just signed.
I think the last 45 seconds of what Senator Schiff says below are an eerie echo to the past. Who says history doesn't repeat itself. Congress didn't cede power entirely, but Trump and the Republicans now know that Democrats fold. It was, in a way, one of our last shots.
I hope we make out well enough for the next six months. I hope Schumer isn't still the leader in the Senate by then. They need to pick someone new. The next time a bill comes up like this, and Democrats have what amounts to pretty much their only shot, they need to take it. They are not going to get many more if they keep this up. They might not even have a shot in six months at the rate we're falling.
I'm not usually gung ho on the far left leaning side of the Democratic party, and still am not on some things (as I think change needs to be slower to win elections), but we need to be more in the fighting spirit like they are. If enough people stand up to authoritarianism, America will ultimately survive. (forever lessened, but still here) It's going to be a bumpy road though. And seeming bumpier by the day. |
