These are sad situations and people who are so vulnerable during disasters. Unfortunately it is not just children, it is also hundreds and hundreds of adults too.  One cannot equip a converted highschool shelter for all such needs, even a 'special needs shelter'...it is just not possible. These people must be MedEvaced out to hospitals somewhere else.

The first wave of 911 calls in a no-electricity situation is usually people on oxygen or otherwise home-bound and compromised who either need electricity or more oxygen - no easy task to meet after a disaster.

Many of the 'vulnerable' people were the ones that did not survive Katrina. Additionally, I have seen a nursing home 'dump' all their patients at the door of a shelter and then the staff leaves. It was a nightmare. We had one fatality...within  the first few hours. The people were so frail.

People MUST investigate the disaster plans of places like nursing homes BEFORE the event happens. Find out who, when and where your loved one will be going.

I also think that we need laws with some teeth about facility 'dumping'.
