If we know Earth's past events then we can better estimate the odds of various events which may occur in this century.

It seems, from some of the preliminary analysis that is just beginning to come out that polar temperatures and melt rates can rise faster than any current model can simulate.

Our best climatoligists can not forecast how high sea levels will be in 50 years. This much I think can be said with some level of certainty because the polar SST's rose in the last warm peak of the Ice Age cycle (due to Earth's wobble) by 6 degrees F and sea levels rose 10+ feet higher than now in less than a century.
That is, if the latest rumors/articles end up being supported by solid evidence. Then, while we may suspect that bad things will likely happen, we might not know how each event will unfold in time to prepare for each of them properly.
