EDMONTON -- Bone-chilling temperatures and deadly wind chills continued to grip the Prairies Monday, while a storm was expected to dump up to 20 centimetres of snow on Vancouver. The forecast provides little relief for Canadians who have faced record snowfalls and low temperatures across the country since last week.

"Winter is a week away, but you'd never know it looking across the country," David Phillips, senior climatologist with Environment Canada, said Monday.

The government agency issued extreme wind-chill warnings for most of Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta Monday. Saskatoon's daytime temperature was -26 C Monday, but with the wind, it was more like -43 C, according to Environment Canada.

Regina was slightly warmer, with a high of -23 C, but the wind chill of pushed that down to -41 C.

In Winnipeg, light snow was predicted along with temperatures in the -22 C range and wind chill making it feel more like -39 C.

In Edmonton, where cold records were smashed over the weekend with a temperature of -46.1 C on Sunday, readings were predicted to rise to -22 C on Monday, but dip back down overnight for a low of -32 C.

Wind chills were predicted to ease in Edmonton Monday, but northern parts of Alberta were expected to face late-day wind chills as low as -50 C. Environment Canada says at these temperatures, frostbite on exposed skin can occur within minutes.

Extreme wind-chill warnings were also issued for southeastern British Columbia, and snowfall warnings were issued along most of the coast. Temperatures in Vancouver were mild Monday, but Environment Canada expected up to 20 centimetres of snow by Tuesday morning, eventually turning to freezing rain.
