SHORT RANGE FORECAST DISCUSSION
NWS HYDROMETEOROLOGICAL PREDICTION CENTER CAMP SPRINGS MD
303 AM EST TUE JAN 05 2010

VALID 12Z TUE JAN 05 2010 - 00Z THU JAN 07 2010

THE WESTERN U.S. WILL SEE THE UPPER LEVEL REMAINS OF AN OLD
PACIFIC STORM SYSTEM CROSS THE NORTHERN ROCKIES TUESDAY. WITH THE
PASSAGE OF THIS FEATURE...SNOW SHOWERS WILL BECOME THE PREDOMINANT
WEATHER FEATURE THROUGHOUT THAT REGION INTO EARLY WEDNESDAY. THIS
SYSTEM...ONCE FORMED IN THE LEE OF THE ROCKIES...SHOULD QUICKLY BE
SHOVED SOUTHWARD BY AN OVERPOWERING ARCTIC HIGH PRESSURE CENTER
PLUNGING TOWARDS THE HIGH PLAINS. AS THIS SYSTEM SCREAMS
DOWN...THE COLDEST AIR OF THE SEASON APPEARS TO BE EN ROUTE WITH
IT. BY EARLY THURSDAY...THE LEADING EDGE OF THIS COLD AIR IS
EXPECTED TO HAVE PUSHED THROUGH TEXAS AND INTO MEXICO AND THE
GULF...AND PROGRESSED AS FAR EASTWARD AS THE MISSISSIPPI. LITTLE
IN THE WAY OF PRECIPITATION IS EXPECTED WITH THE FRONTAL PASSAGE
IN THE PLAINS...AS THE REGION IS ALREADY DOMINATED BY A VERY COLD
AND DRY AIRMASS. BEHIND THE FRONT...EMBEDDED IN THE ARCTIC AIR
MASS...SOME SCATTERED TO WIDESPREAD SNOW SHOWERS ARE
POSSIBLE...THOUGH THIS IS NOT EXPECTED TO PRODUCE LARGE
ACCUMULATIONS. IN THE MOUNTAINS HOWEVER...SCATTERED SNOW SHOWERS
WILL ACCOMPANY THE PASSAGE OF THE FRONT...ESPECIALLY IN FAVORED
UPSLOPE AREAS ALONG AND NEAR THE FRONT RANGE. SEE THE HPC WINTER
WEATHER PRODUCT SUITE FOR SPECIFICS ON THE SNOWFALL.
