I noticed the woodstock, Ireland, astronaut, murder headlines in your photo also - that was a hell of a yr.
While they returned to earth July 24th, Apollo 11 astronauts were not let out of quarantine until Aug 13th - 4 days before Camille hit - to the cheers of all Americans. NASA was quite busy reviewing data I would imagine.
The NWS did a hell of a job with what they had - GEOS wouldn't be launched into orbit until 1975. Numbus III was state of the art at the time. Here's some shots of Camille satellite views: http://www.deadlystorms.com/storms/1969/Camille/satphotos.htm - wow, have they come a long way ! |
