Someone did a chemical analysis of the ash that fell in Iceland.

It is a mixture of various ceramics:

58% Silica
16% Aluminum Oxide
10% Iron Oxide form of Wustite
5% Calcium Oxide
5% Sodium Oxide
Traces of other ceramics

All of these are chemically inert, so they wont react with water.
Also, it doesn't make a good fertilizer since no organic elements in it.
The worst part is, it just chokes everything - blocks sunlight on leaves and creates mud when it rains.

Volcanoes on occasion emit sulfur dioxide with can form to sulfuric acid in the air and then rain down.
However, this volcano emitted hardly any.  
I only saw one burst of SO2 from it on Saturday.  
The rest of the time nothing.
