I was chief of an emergency communications center on Long Island 19 years ago when Hurricane Bob hit . What a mess. Arrived at work 6am local time. At 6am, already long lines at gas stationsWe had 19 emergency lines coming into the center, 9-1-1 etc.  Six operators working. All lines lit up. Impossible for anyone to get through. All callers just wanted to know, "What should I do?" Listen to the local radio and TV for Pete's sake!
The Hurricane passed over about 11 am that day and by that time, calls had slacked off. Afterwards the calls started back up about complaints of the usual power outages and storm damage for several days. Two hundred people lined up outside the local supermarket trying to get food the next day. A hundred lined up outside the hardware store trying to get batteries, etc. that were long sold out.
If it happens this Labor Day weekend again, it will be a disaster of major proportions. That is why, by Wednesday I will have a full underground tank of gas for my home generator, my vehicles gassed up. Food and some personal necessities purchased in advance. You have to prepare in advance and you will be OK. And now I am retired I can enjoy the excitement in my home, not directing a 9-1-1 center!
