Earl is a big'ol storm just looking for an excuse to expend some pent up aggression. With TS force winds out 200 nautical miles someone could see a mess inland.

For perspective, each degree of longitude is 69.2 statue miles. That's 60.11 nautical miles.

Now for conversation's sake consider that Cape Hatteras State Park on the Outer Banks will be the close point to the storm. With TS force winds extending out 200 nautical miles or about three degrees of Longitude west of the Center of Circulation, that means it would be possible for TS force winds to be felt as far inland as Raleigh NC !

What is the point of all this little exercise? Well, I believe that most civilians don't get it at all. They hear numbers and predictions from TWC or their local met and make decisions. They fail to do the hard work of actually calculation their tolerance for a worst case scenario, their highest tolerance for storm activity. Until the storm hits and it scares the living crap out of them. To many it's a game with a few thrill and maybe they make it on YouTube.

Knowing your storm tolerance is a lot like knowing your investment risk tolerance. Both very, very import things in life.
