Here's the problem for hte locals. The closest motels to Hatteras Island (if you go above the Nags Head, Kitty Hawk area) are in Virginia Beach. Probably not much better. Or inland all the way to Plymouth. Plymouth has one or maybe two small motels. Then you would have to go all the way to Rocky Mount which is a good 21/2  hours from Hatteras in good traffic. Unless they have family living inland that they can go to, there just aren't many motels. There are also no shelters set-up on Hatteras Island. There are seven villages with a significant local population on the island. I think sometimes people get the wrong idea and think the island is all a state park.

There is also almost always the real probabilityof hwy 12 being cut-off and there being no way to get back to the island to check on property. People just aren't willing to take that chance for the most part. The ferries from Swan Quarter and Cedar Island take almost 3 hours (if they are running) to get to Ocracoke and then you have to hope the Hatteras/Ocracoke ferry is running.

Not saying that there are GOOD reasons not to leave, just trying to give folks the picture as to why not many residents do.

I'm in full, 100% agreement that all non-residents/tourists should leave.

My daughter just sent me some cell phone pics from Frisco beach and the pier. The waves are kicking up really big already.
