Now I remember why this is really fascinating.....

The Appalachians are a huge mystery to geologists. While yes, they were once as high, if not higher, then the current Himalaya's, by now those mountains would be long gone and eroded away.  Evidence shows our Appalachians are much younger and uplifited much more recently in the late Cenozoic Era (this is our current era). Also, rocks taken show that the material associated with parts of the uplift are Eocene in nature (Eocene stretched from 54 to 34m years ago). And maybe the Laurentian Abyss off the coast of Atlantic Canada is the beginning of a trench, and not a glacial remnant.
