On June 8, 2011 a minor earthquake shook parts of Missouri and Illinois.

There was no damage, just quite a few residents shaken from slumber.

For me, this served as a gentle reminder that we are sitting right on top of a potentially mighty fault line, the New Madrid Fault.

So I took notice of an email I recently received about Earthquake safety.

This information is provided by Doug Copp, a Rescue Chief and Disaster Relief Manager of the American Rescue Team (ARTI).

His experience and expertise has brought forth some amazing information on how to stay safe during an earthquake!

Basically, there are two main rules:

1)      Do NOT get under anything for protection. Duck and cover is not a safety rule for earthquakes.

2)      DO look for what Doug calls The Triangle of Life.  That is the void or space created NEXT to a large, sturdy object when a building collapses.

Here are some other points to keep in mind:

The fetal position is the perfect position to curl up into when next to the object creating your Triangle of Life.

Think OUT - outer walls are better than inner walls, outside is better than outer wall. Stay as far away from the inner center of a building as possible.

If you're in bed, roll off the bed onto the floor next to the bed.

If you are in a large chair or sofa, get down next to the chair or sofa.

If you are in a car, get out of the car, and get NEXT to the car.

In all instances, once you are next to the large object, get into the fetal position.

Don't go to the stairs!
