MCCS Okinawa shared Commander Fleet Activities

Still at TCCOR 3... with an update about Super Typhoon Jelawat from Commander Fleet Activities Okinawa.

"Beware the Jelawat, my son "

Good morning, Okinawa! We're still at TCCOR 3, but will probably make our way into TCCOR 2 this afternoon as Jelawat starts making its presence felt. We're still looking at a Saturday afternoon storm passag
e, with a closest-point-of-approach of . NINE MILES. And this with a storm over 300 miles from side to side with an eye 22 miles across. Wow. Despite all the chatter about this storm weakening as it approaches, Jelawat has held together pretty darned well; it's STILL a "super" typhoon with sustained winds over 135 knots and will be AT LEAST a Category 1 storm when it hits Okinawa. Our argumentative, capricious models are still disagreeing a lot (and staying away from the doughnuts), but they've all decided on one thing - they want to visit Okinawa. Tomorrow.

OK, Tropical Cyclone Condition of Readiness 3 means we "initiate a general clean up" - in my case, that means still cleaning up from the last typhoon. Sigh. When TCCOR 2 hits sometime today, that'll be your cue to start "removing or securing all outside items" and REALLY getting ready for the storm - sandbagging doors, stuffing rags in openings, taping door jambs, blah, blah, blah. And check on your neighbors - especially if they just arrived on Okinawa and are standing outside looking on curiously and wondering why you're wrestling with a trampoline and calling it some pretty uncomplimentary names. They may not have experienced the special joy that comes with stuffing your Little Tykes Multi-Colored Hard Plastic Ballistic Projectiles into your tiny living room every two weeks and watching them leak on your rug for three days. Welcome them to Okinawa. ;)

Fleet Activities Okinawa's Typhoon Preparedness Checklist is located in the notes section of our Facebook page and on our official web site - use it to ensure you've done everything you can to get ready for this storm. And PLEASE take it seriously - Jelawat may well be the sucker punch of the typhoon season for us!

Stay tuned, stay safe! Stormy
